Bhaag Milha Bhaag is a biopic movie based on the life of India’s one of the best athletes Milkha Singh who was given the name “Flying Sikh”. Directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra and written by the famous script writer and lyricist Prasoon Johshi, the movie has tried to bring the long years of struggle in the personal and professional life of Milkha Singh. The movie has got the famous star casts- Farhan Akhtar , in the lead role, Sonam Kapoor, as Milkha’s Wife and Rebecca Breeds, as Milkha’s girl friend.
Milkha , the Flying Sikh ran away from his motherland, Pakistan during the partition of India in 1947 after witnessing the brutal murder of his parents. The name of the movie is the last words his father had uttered for his beloved son-“Bhag Milkha Bhag” where “bhag” means run in English. The movie starts trails back to the days where emotionally devastated Milkha Singh undergoes a stringent military training and participates in various competitions those were taking place in the country and abroad. The audiences get the opportunity to watch montages of training that Milkha had undergone, immoral rivalry, hard-earned victories and a strict by fair coach who was the driving force behind Milka Singh’s rise as all time famous athlete of India.
The movie runs into two parallel tracks, one that is about Milka’s professional life where he joins Indian army and gets motivated to run for the country. The second track is about his personal life where his interactions with his teenage infatuation. His bondage with his sister Isri Kaur is also very well shown in the movie.
Milkha hard work brings him success but his deep wounds never got healed and it starts bleeding again when he got an invitation to peace games between the two countries-India and Pakistan. It reminds him of his refugee life. The role of Milkha’s coach, who was military personal, is played by Pawan Malhotra and his mentor’s role is played by Yograj Singh, father of famous Indian Cricketer, Yuvraj Singh. Divya Dutt is just perfect to play the role of Milkha Singh’s sister.
The movie is longer than an average movie made in Bollywood and critics feel that some parts of childhood days, romance tracks and songs and dance could been trimmed to make it a neat and concrete movie on the life of iconic athlete of India, Milkha Singh. Farhan Akhtar’s acting is worth watching as he has gone deep into the character and has done complete justice to the character. Sonam Kapoor has also done what she was supposed to do to the character.
The cinematography of the movie done by Binod Pradhan is amazing and Sankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is not extraordinary but pleasing. The singers are Shankar Mahadeva, Siddharth Mahadevan, Loy Mendosa, Sukhvinder Singh, Shreya Ghosal, Javed Bashir, Divya Kumar and Arif Lohar.
If the cinematic perspective is to be considered then the movie has failed to keep the expectations in some places but it is worth watching and it is given the rating 3.5 out of 5.
